Light is what photography is made of. The word “photography” literally means “writing with light.” Whether you're using the sun, a desk lamp, or a flash, your understanding of light has the biggest impact on how your photos look.
Key Lighting Qualities
- Direction: Where is the light coming from? Front, side, or back?
- Quality: Is it soft and diffused (cloudy sky), or hard and sharp (bare bulb)?
- Color: Warm like sunset? Cool like shade? Neutral like studio lights?
Each of these changes how your subject appears — and how your photo feels.
Natural vs Artificial Light
- Natural light is always changing — learn to observe it throughout the day
- Artificial light gives more control but may need modifiers (softboxes, reflectors)
Tips
- Golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) gives warm, flattering light
- Avoid harsh midday sun when possible, or find open shade
- Use window light indoors for soft, directional lighting without gear
